All About Braintree, MA

Braintree was originally founded in 1625 by Captain Wollaston and was named Mount Wollaston and was renamed Merrymount which are both areas of Quincy today. Braintree at first included what are now the towns of Randolph, Holbrook, and Milton and the City of Quincy.

Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, as well as John Hancock were born in Braintree at the time. Quincy claims to be the birthplace of these great men, and in fact they were born in what is Quincy today. However, Quincy used to be part of Braintree at the time of their births. Braintree was also the birthplace of General Sylvanus Thayer, who was the founder of West Point.

Also, the infamous Sacco & Venzetti murders took place in South Braintree. Even though they were convicted and excuted, there have always been those who felt they did not commit the crimes.
